Leave of Absence/Return from Leave/Withdrawal

Leave of Absence

An absence for a certain period owing to personal reasons such as illness, military service, or other unavoidable circumstances.

Request Dates for Leave of Absence

  • General leave of absence: Until the 1/2 of the semester
    (provided that freshmen in undergraduate programs, the Graduate School of Dentistry, the Graduate School of Medicine, Law School, and integrated of BA-MA programs are not allowed to apply for a leave of absence in the first semester of the program)
  • Leave of absence due to illness : When the cause for this application arises.
    (Tuition fees students paid will not be refunded if the students apply for the leave of absence without obtaining credits from the day 3/4 of the semester has finished.)

Important Notice

  • Total period allowed for leave of absence is as follows (leave of absence for mandatory military service is not included to the following criterion)
    - Undergraduate program : Up to eight semesters (four semesters for students of the Department of Pre-Medicine and transfer students)
    - Master’s degree program : Up to four semesters (six semesters for students of the Graduate School of Business and Graduate School of Culture (Media Art Program), and four years for students of the Graduate School of Dentistry)
    - Doctoral program : Up to six semesters (up to five years for students of the Graduate School of Dentistry)
    - Integrated program of MA-Ph.D. program : up to eight semesters (six years for students of combined program)
  • Period per leave of absence is a maximum two-semester (one-year) period. Those who want to extend the period of leave of absence can apply for an extension before the permitted period ends (available within the maximum number of semesters).

Return from Leave

Registration of students who are continuing their studies by submitting an application for returns during a designated period once their leave of absence term expires.

Important Notice

  • Students will automatically be dismissed if they do not return once the term of the leave of absence is over.
    Those who applied for a leave of absence due to military service and are discharged within three weeks from the first day of the semester are eligible for early return.
    Those who applied for a leave of absence due to military service should return in the semester immediately after discharge unless there are proper reasons.

Dismissal (Voluntary Withdrawal/Dismissal)

Circumstances where students discontinue studies.

Period of Voluntary Withdrawal Application

  • At any time

Voluntary Withdrawal Procedure

  • Filling in the withdrawal form (by applicant)
  • Permission from the department
  • Submission of required documents to college administration office
  • Request for approval (college → president)
  • Permission (by president)

Dismissal

  • Students who meet the terms of dismissal as follows will lose the student status.
    - Failure to return after the leave of absence period has completed.
    - Dual citizenship
    - Inability to continue studies due to inevitable circumstances such as illness
    - Failure to pay tuition or other costs within the fixed deadline
    - Expiration of attendance years
    - Three repeats exceeding the limit prescribed in Article 50.3 of School Regulations
    - Three consecutive academic warnings as prescribed in Article 43 of School Regulations

Period of Dismissal Process

  • Dismissal due to academic warnings and accumulated repeats: After grade is recognized.
